WHAT IS CYSTIC ACNE?
Cystic acne is a rare form of severe acne. It occurs when dead skin cells, oil from the skin and bacteria clog up pores in your skin resulting in cyst formation. This canlead to a inflamed and infected cyst which is often painful and unsightly, causing high levels of emotional and physical stress. The most common areas affected include the face, upper trunk and shoulders.
WHAT CAUSES CYSTIC ACNE?
The majority of causes of cystic acne can be attributed to genetic factors (around 80%) and hormone disturbance and imbalance, particularly during puberty. People with oily skin type are also at higher risk of cystic acne. Some studies have shown certain food with high glycaemic index and refined sugars may also increase risk of cystic acne.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CYSTIC ACNE
- Red tender bumps (papules)
- Large, tender pus-filled lumps under the skin (cystic lesions)
- Solid painful lumps under the skin (nodules)
- Scarring caused by inflammation within dermis of skin
TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR CYSTIC ACNE
TOPICAL RETINOID CREAMS
Retinoid creams are effective at reducing the underlying inflammation and congestion of the hair follicles caused by the build p of bacteria, dead skin cells and oil. Retinol is a form of vitamin A which can be purchased over the counter for mild symptoms. For moderate to severe cystic acne with evidence of scarring, a stronger retinol will need to be prescribed afterconsultation from a specialist doctor.
ORAL ANTIBIOTICS
Cystic acne is usually inflamed and oral antibiotic therapy can be effective in controlling the redness and underlying inflammation which can help other topical agents work more effectively.
SKIN PEELS
Medical grade skin peels can be very effective in reducing skin inflammation and oil production. Skill peels help to exfoliate skin and remove dead skin cells and excess oil from skin to help unplug hair follicles. Chemical peels help repair damaged skin by increasing collagen regeneration which is effective in treating any underlying scarring caused by cystic acne. This process also helps to rebuild a smother and clearer top layer of your skin.
MICRONEEDLING FOR CYSTIC ACNE
Microneedling involves pricking the surface of the skin tiny sterilised needles which help stimulate skin regeneration through collagen synthesis. This process results in smoother skin, reduction in scar tissue and reduced inflammation.
LASER THERAPY FOR CYSTIC ACNE
Targeted laser treatment can be very effective in treating cystic acne and underlying scarring by stimulating new skin cell formation by inducing collagen stimulation and reducing oil formation. This technique helps in the natural healing of the skin and be used very effectively alongside other treatments.
